03MAR2020 - It’s no secret that nukes have to know a lot. A shit-ton, really. Even the most junior mechanic standing watch in the bowels of the ship is expected to have a decent grasp of not only the complex machinery surrounding them, but also the theory surrounding fluid systems, reactor dynamics, electrical circuits, etc. The knowledge requirements for Navy Nukes are sky high and, well, sometimes you just might not see the reason in knowing everything you’re told you need to know (stares in primary chemistry).
Electricians are some of the worst in this regard. They really don’t do all that much involving the actual nuclear systems in the plant. They are laser-focused on keeping the electrons flowing and keeping their equipment from catching on fire. Is the roving electrician really going to be any better of watchstander because they can write down the reactivity balance equation?
